Peru Jungle Training
Base Ministry seeks funding for a project in Peru in November 2025. It would train 30 leaders from 3 churches to use sports ministry as an evangelism and discipleship tool. From this training, the leaders will be ready to take this to other native tribal areas and reach more villages with the Gospel and help establish revitalized churches.
The Need - A People Without a Shepherd
In the jungles of Peru sit the tribal lands of the Shipibo Kenibo people. Many years ago, Christian missionaries came to these lands and preached the gospel. Then the missionaries left, and the buildings they built and the messages they gave both fell into abandonment. Although some of them have remembered the glory of Jesus Christ, the vast majority have turned back to Shamanistic beliefs or have given up on God altogether.
God has called Julio Serrano, the Director of Base in Peru, to help refill the churches that have been left behind. He is currently teaching young Shipibo basic theology and how to be a shepherd of people according to the word of God.
Julio is also very passionate about having practical tools for people to use. He has invited a team from the States to come to the jungles of Peru and run a training on how to use sports as a gospel-centered ministry tool. Sports is a great way to share the Gospel without threatening so much of the life this area has come to know, cartels, shamans, and mafia-related deforestation projects.
Meeting the need - Training New Shepherds with New Tools
As Julio trains these young leaders with theological and practical tools, we get to see them go into the rest of the villages and reach people with the Gospel. The training is designed to be very practical and give the leaders something they can implement, even if we aren’t around.
This is what a mission force looks like in the jungle of Peru. Filling the abandoned churches with biblically sound leaders who understand the scripture and have the proper tools for the Shipibo people.
The week-long training will focus on practical ministry as well as the sports camp tools. On top of that, we will also have a chance to run a camp alongside Julio and his team.
Future Impact
The hope for this trip is that the leaders will walk away with four things:
Practical ministry training, the training for these leaders will focus on living as a servant leader, overcoming conflicts, and general ministry tools. They will be ready to share the Gospel, their testimony, and conduct relational evangelism.
Sports Ministry tool, sports is a great ministry tool for both developing leaders and teams of servants and also reaching out. In Peru, they will take the sports ministry concept and use it in different villages around the area.
More tools as a shepherd, after finishing the theological training provided by Julio, these young leaders will be going out to serve in different villages. These trainings are helping give them practical tools they will be able to use as they shepherd other villages and rebuild the churches.
Building Julio’s team, as Julio’s ministry grows, the necessity for more trainers and volunteers to help at Base Ministry in Peru will also grow. So a group of well-trained volunteers will help him as he continues to do ministry across Peru and around the region.
